Time Out Country Walks near London Volume 1

Walk 12 : Farnham to Godalming

Updates and Feedback

Summary No major changes.
Updates

Fully revised in Aug 2008.

This is a lovely walk, one of my favourites. It follows the North Downs Way then Greendsand Way through a secluded, forested valley passing close to (ruined) Waverley Abbey. After lunch, more remote woods follow, then in the open through Pepper Harrow park. Finally, it follows a narrow wooded river valley into historic Godalming, which has nice pubs.

By Car: Train is easier for this one. Change at Guildford or Woking to return to your car.

Just after the start of the walk you have to cross the A31 dual carriage way at the traffic lights but 600 m further on in the instructions you have to cross back. It is no longer safe or practical to cross back. Instead when you get to the A31 do not cross but turn right and in 150m fork right on a car wide track signposted North Downs Way - return to the instructions in book at the first mention of the North Downs Way

Church Warden for St Nicholas in Peper Harow has changed, now call 01483 810 526 to arrange a visit. However, unfortunately the church has burnt down on Christmas Eve 2007 and will be under reconstruction for some time.

blue Mar-02 93 lunch 'The Donkey' offers gourmet meals at moderate prices, not 'simple food'. The main meals are very substantial. To sit indoors, booking is strongly recommended, as they get very busy. They now have two real donkeys living in the garden.
blue 93 tea There is a tea shop in Godalming a little further on, the same side as Pizza Piazza.
blue 94 col 1, para 7 The 'Redgrave theatre rehearsal studios' are now an Abbeyfield home. The swing gate has gone. Instructions should now read 'go right over a wooden footbridge with railings, ignoring a vehicle bridge a few metres ahead. Walk to the A31 with a chain link fence on your left'. It would be great if someone could send me the name of the Abbeyfield House, which I mentally noted but forgot.
blue Mar-02 94 col 2, para 6 'Campana Finishing School' is now labelled 'Constance Spry'.
blue Mar-02 96 col 2, para 7 Although the public footpath so far remains, straight ahead across the garden of Pooh Corner House, the owners have built a permissive footpath to the left through the bushes which they would prefer people to use. They keep exotic pigs in the garden. Instructions should now read 'In 400 metres go through a metal gate in a tall metal fence. Immediately turn left, following the "Permissive footpath" yellow arrow, to walk through bushes along the edge of the garden to a tarmac road.'
blue Mar-02 97 col 1, para 4 The gold leaf gates are now black. Para 5: 'Amina heights' is now 'Three Barrows Place'.
