Alternative ending in Godalming for Guildford Circular, walk 12a

This ending adds about 3 miles to the Circular walk, by walking south along the Wey navigation to Goadalming, linking up with the very end of Book 1's Milford to Godalming walk.

  1. On reaching the Wey navigation on the way back to Guildford, turn right towards Godalming (instead of left towards Guildford), and simply follow the canal towpath.

  2. After 2.5 miles, the Farncombe boathouse will be visible on the left hand side of the canal. This is a possible tea place in Book 1's Milford to Godalming Walk.

  3. Follow Book 1's instructions from here, but briefly: At this point, either turn left along the road into Godalming town centre for pubs and more tea place, or continue on the opposite side of the canal towards the station.

  4. After 200 meters, veer slightly to the left towards a visible road. Turn left along the road, and the train station is on your right.

Lunch pub option for Guildford Circular, walk 12a

For those doing this walk who would prefer a pub lunch rather than lunch in the Watts Gallery cafe, there is a pleasant option, the Withies Inn in Compton, not far off the route. Directions as follows:

Follow the directions on page 135 as far as the end of the first paragraph in the second column (".....now 110 degrees").

The next para starts. "In 180 metres, just before the track ends at a rusted metal fieldgate, turn right across a stile, following a yellow arrow."

Proceed from this point as follows:

  1. "In five metres, ignore a stile to the left to carry straight on. In 40 metres, there is a wood on your left hand side. In a further 120 metres, go over a stile and left, still with the edge of the woods on your left hand side.

  2. In 140 metres, you go over a stile and enter the wood, carrying straight on and ignoring all ways off. In a further 450 metres, you come out of the wood onto a tarmac lane.

  3. Turn left onto the lane, and in 10 metres, turn right, your direction 200 degrees. In 250 metres, you come to the Withies Inn (01483 421158) on your left hand side.

  4. This pleasant pub has both indoor and outdoor seating, and a varied menu, and serves food from midday to 2.30pm daily

  5. After lunch, come out of the pub and turn right up the lane. In 250 metres, at a T-junction, go right. Follow this quiet dead-end lane for 700 metres until you pass Polsted Manor on your left. Follow the lane here as it turns right and becomes a gravel track. your direction 110 degrees initially.

  6. In 350 metres you come to a house - Polsted Lodge, and go through wooden gates to continue on the track. In 250 metres you get to a wooden fieldgate, a private way into Loseley House.

You can now resume the walk directions in the book at the point marked [*] half way down the second column on page 135
