In Memoriam
David Hoyland (1954 – 2024)

Some personal tributes from regular walkers:
- David was always a great guy to have on the walks: unfailingly cheerful and enthusiastic. When you saw him at the start of a walk you had the promise of a witty and stimulating conversation. He was so cultured and knowledgeable and always had interesting views on topics.
- David joined us for the second leg of the SWC Porto to Santiago Camino trip, which was from the Portuguese border to Santiago de Compostela. As always he was a cheerful and interesting companion.
- David was a cheerful and lively companion, with a famously brisk walking pace. On the few occasions I managed to keep up with him on SWC walks, we shared wonderfully engaging conversations. He spoke with passion about playing the organ in churches, the intricacies of his music compositions, and the joy of teaching the piano to another walker. He also fondly recalled visiting his brother, an artist living in France. David was a fascinating and kind-hearted person to know, even if only a little, and he will be deeply missed.
This In memory page on the Royal College of Music website has a good summary of his musical career.
