Awareness is not just

  (Walk 16. 6 April 2002)

Awareness is not stopping at the craving

Of wanting a Cadbury’s fruit and nut chocolate bar.

Awareness is being that shopkeeper handing it over.

Is being that fruit and nut bar, breaking up piece by piece.

Awareness is being that melting moment.

Awareness includes the union that craving seeks- and more.

We are this lonely field

The birds singing in the trees

And the whole kit-kaboodle.

Like a dreamed character in a novel I am waiting-

‘where have the others got to?’

But I’m not just this waiting and wondering.

Awareness is the glimpse of that far-off silver aeroplane

Is the movement of a breeze

Bringing a scent past these nostrils.

Everything is such indescribable perfection.

Awareness is not just a 45rpm vinyl record by the Kinks

Playing in your mind

With Ray Davies singing in a nasal voice

‘I need you-

‘More than anyone else has needed anyone before!‘

-Awareness is the sound at the end, where the stylus stays in that little circle

And you keep listening to the scratching, repeating

Around and around and around

So mesmerised in that pool of sound

You can’t get up to turn it off.

The others have still not appeared

So like the wind, albeit not as swift

I will get going.
