A decent, varied 9.5 miles around the south and east of Berkhamstead, Hertfordshire. It was undertaken on a very pleasant late February day with hardly any breeze. Initially, the walk follows the Grand Union Canal Walk, then turns sharply back on itself to ascend to the busy A41; there's a foot tunnel here before a descent to Bottom Farm, where it's possible to take a short-cut. The main walk continues to ascend again to Ashley Green, where lunch can be had on the green, or in a nearby pub. Thereafter, it's another descent into Hockeridge Wood where there's another opportunity to shorten the walk. Otherwise, it's on through Pancake Wood. There's another crossing of the A41, before the crossing of some school playing fields, and the return to the station soon after. This walk is not bad at all, if you're prepared to tolerate train noise initially, and then traffic noise for much of the remainder; the woods are probably the quietest section. There was also evidence that this walk could be very muddy at times, being in an equestrian area and utilising bridleways.
