Varied coastal walk past quiet shingle beaches and the busier south coast resorts of Worthing and Littlehampton

History

Club walks since April 2015, and a summary which goes back to Jan 2010.

Date Option Post # Weather
Wed, 25-Feb-26 Along the Sussex coast – Littlehampton to Worthing, Lancing or Shoreham 23 Warm weather and non stop sun
Sat, 27-Jan-24 a Coastal Walk (map-led) with its first ever outing: Littlehampton to Shoreham-by-Sea 6 sunny and part cloudy

Length: 13.8/17.8/22.4 km (8.6/11.1/13.9 miles) 2/10

To make a change from the soaked countryside, a walk along the sea front following the England Coast Path, from Littlehampton eastwards. Several possible stopping places depending how far you want to go, but after Worthing there is quite a long roadside section unless the tide is out. On the web page the walk is described east to west and the GPX goes that way too but as we are following the coast, there should be no difficulty finding the way.

Trains: 0946 from Victoria (Clapham Junction 0953, East Croydon 1004) arriving 1134. Direct trains back from Worthing 03/33, Lancing 07/37, Shoreham-by-Sea 12/42. More but slower trains back via Brighton. A return to Littlehampton will cover all journeys, but it's quite pricey so it might be worth getting advance tickets each way.

Lunch: beachside cafes or go inland for a pub:

Blue Bird Cafe, Ferring, BN12 5QX; Sea Lane Cafe, Goring BN12 4HR; , The Mulberry pub Goring (01903-241555), 10 minute walk directly inland along Sea Lane from the Sea Lane Cafe.

Tea: In Worthing, some cafes near the pier and plenty of places in town if heading for the station. The Railway Hotel by the station is in the Good Beer Guide. In Lancing, Perch on the Beach, open till 4. In Shoreham, a range of cafes and pubs, including the interesting Old Star micropub.

Shortening the walk : The railway line from Littlehampton runs all the way along the route, albeit quite a bit inland, and there are four stations before Worthing. For instance, we reach Goring-by-Sea after about 6 miles but it's another mile from the shore to the station.

L=swc.211 but note we are doing this in reverse.

Take the 09.46 from Victoria with your Freedom Pass. Buy an open day return from East Croydon (10.04) to Littlehampton with your Rail card for £17.70 on Trainpal app. It includes Split Tickets which probably makes it cheaper. Gives more flexibility.

The glass pavilion cafe at the end of Worthing pier is worth a visit.

Sadly, “Perch on the Pier” at the end of Worthing Pier is closed on Tues & Weds. In any case it's more of a restaurant these days. However, it's worth walking out and back along the pier for the artwork on display as well as the views along the coastline.

At the end of a walk last year we tried Trading Post Coffee Roasters in Montague Street for our tea stop. Well worth trying if it hasn't closed for the day by the time you get there.

Warm weather and non stop sun lured a big group down to the coast including a few Sussex residents and quite a number of faces unfamiliar on Wednesdays. I lost count of numbers but at least23 - including one late starter - plus two dogs.

The group soon split with a faster group haring along the path while others including the dogs and their owners walked along the beach (it was low tide), jumping/climbing/crawling over many groynes.

About half of us regrouped for a sandwich on the beach somewhere around Kingston, and then met some more at the Bluebird cafe. My party were hoping for coffee there but it was so busy we carried on to a van about half a mile further which served very good strong coffee and big slabs of cake.

I think some finished at Goring; others had mentioned carrying on as far as Brighton - I don't know if they did this. At least one was heading for Lancing. I think 10 of us walked to the end of Worthing Pier - thanks for the tip about the artwork Sean - before either heading for the Railway Hotel for a drink or the 1703 train. Best day of the year so far!

Inspired choice by Sandy Absolutely fabulous expedition after very gloomy and wet 2 months Jane

For some unfathomable reason, this seems to have never been posted before! Well, here it is. Looks like a good winter walk to me… Posted here in reverse, starting in Littlehampton!
Why in reverse? The prevailing wind comes from the west, i.e. is in the back (this may not be the case on the day of course) and the optional extension then comes at the end when time and energy levels can be better judged. Also, this gets the longer train journey out of the way in the morning.
Length: 22.4 km (13.9 mi) [any number of shorter options available, plus one extension; see below]
Ascent/Descent: negligible
Net Walking Time: 4 ½ hours
Toughness: 2/10
Take the 09.16 Littlehampton train from Victoria (09.23 CJ, 09.34 EC), arrives Littlehampton 11.01.
Return trains from Shoreham-by-Sea : xx.13 and xx.43 (journey time 75 mins). Buy a Littlehampton return.
Varied coastal walk past quiet shingle beaches and the busier south coast resorts of Littlehampton and Worthing. Make your way along the Arun River to the coast and turn left along it, i.e. with the prevailing wind in the back. Mainly easy going on hard paths - a mix of pavement, grassy paths, and 1 km of shingle.
If the tide is not on your side (i.e. should it be high), then a private estate in West Kingston will force you to walk around it along roads, and on the stretch between Worthing and Lancing, you have to walk along an A road for 2 km (safe but noisy) instead of the sandy beach.
Shorter walk : the trainline with its many stops never runs much more than 1 km inland from the walk route.
Extension in Shoreham : out-and-back detour to the east, along a beach boardwalk, to Shoreham Fort (free), a fine viewpoint.
Lunch : Lots of choice, check the webpage for details.
T ea : Lots of choice in Shoreham.

  • 6 gathered at Littlehampton station in sunny and part cloudy weather. We quickly got to the estuary and from then it was all along the coastal path. The surface underfoot was mainly tarmac but with quite a few stretches of grass and a short stretch of shingle. The churning waves on one side and the individual sea-front houses on the other provided constant interest. Early lunch was had at the BlueBird Cafe and in the afternoon we were treated to far views of the wind farm out to sea and all the way to Birling gap in the distance. Every shape and size of dog seemed out walking too - joined, of course, by our very own Flo.
