Almost 15 miles of walking on a glorious Autumn day in the chalky uplands of North-West Essex. There's picturesque thatched cottages in attractive villages; rolling hills; wooded greenways and some good examples of 'pargeting' ( a medieval plastering method).

Lunch is had at Chrishall church, one of a number of attractive churches on the walk. This is also close to the highest point in Essex (147m, 482ft), offering views down the 'winding valley' that gives Wendens Ambo' its name.

Thereafter, the Icknield Way is followed to Elmdon, with views across the Cambridgeshire Plain, followed by more field boundaries, another crossing of the noisy M11, prior to the descent back into Wendens Ambo.

A very decent walk, marking the last longer one before the onset of GMT. Always a sad occasion for this walker...
