  • Ockley to Warnham walk | 4K | Day Saturday | 🇬🇧 Hiking UK | England
    Hiking In London, May-22

Length 16.5km (10.3 miles), 5 hours. For the whole outing, including trains, sights and meals, allow 8 hours 40 minutes.

    Toughness 3 out of 10.

This is a beautiful walk through an unspoilt countryside of fields, woods and gentle hills, with a choice of two homely country pubs for lunch. The peace and idyll is only spoilt on those days when the landing and take off flight paths for Gatwick airport are directly above the walk route.

In this sleepy corner on the Surrey-Sussex border it seems as if nothing exceptional has happened through the ages. You go through no bustling towns, pass no grand country houses and there are no particularly interesting historical events to relate. Just mile after mile of oak woods and rural delights.

Note that there is no Sunday service or evening service on this line (see last train times below), and it is 1.3km to the station from the village pub in Warnham.

This was an incredibly wet walk! All 10.3 miles, from beginning to end...rivers of mud! It was also an incredibly attractive walk, spoilt only by the incessant hum of jets in the background.

The morning section is one of crossing fields, and some wonderful woodland walking, though pretty slippy underfoot today. Just in time for lunch, the splendidly located Parish Church of St John the Baptist pops up in the middle of a wood; well worth a visit!

Thereafter, it's on past the suggested lunch time hostelry in Walliswood prior to more meadow and woodland walking in the afternoon.

The Berghaus boots passed their water-proof tests to make this a very relaxing walk, though it would have been even more so had it not been for Gatwick! Take this noise away, and St John's would be a very spiritual place indeed.
