  • Flitwick Circular including The Two Moors Heritage Trail
    Javier Vagabond, May-21

We leave Flitwick along the Flit River and the Two Moors Heritage Walk to reach Flitton with its church and the Grade-I listed De Grey Mausoleum. We carry on to Silsoe and Wrest Park. Later we visit the site of Cainhoe Castle, a Norman Castle and village wiped out by the Black Death in 1348. In Clophill, we visit the ruins of the Old St Mary's Church. Along the Greensand Ridge Walk we reach Maulden with its church and the Ailesbury Mausoleum. We return to Flitton Moor and we divert to follow The Two Moors Heritage Walk again all the way back to Flitwick.

A pleasant enough 11 miler for this walker's return to 'pastures old'.

Starting out from the public transport arrival point for Centre Parcs Woburn, Flitwick station, the walker is soon aside the tranquil Flit river, following the Two Moors Heritage Trail. Crossing Flitwick Moor, it's then onto field-side paths with views to the Greensand Ridge.

Lunch is had in Clophill, beside the Flit again, prior to a gentle ascent into Maulden Wood. The route then utilises the Greensand Ridge Walk, which also provides views of the North-Easterly extremities of the Chiltern Hills in the distance. Passing through the village of Maulden, the walk returns to Flitton and Flitwick Moors, but with a wonderful woodland variation to the morning section.

A very pleasant return after an enforced absence for this walker, aided and abetted by some delightful weather.
